Misting systems, including residential, industrial, commercial, and agricultural applications, are custom designed. Using minimal amounts of water, Cool Zone misting systems are site-specific and professionally installed. Using high-quality, long lasting industrial-grade equipment, Cool Zone can install misting systems that last.

Applications for Misting Systems include:

  • Climate control: controls temperature, humidity and air movement for optimal comfort, or manufacturing conditions
  • Temperature control, both inside and out: Misting systems can reduce the ambient temperature by up to 30 degrees.
  • Humidification: By controlling the amount of moisture in the air, high-quality manufacturing requirements can be met and sustained, improving production and ROI.
  • Dust Control: Like humidification, dust control is critical to specialized manufacturing and industrial environments.
  • Livestock care: Cooling livestock, including but not limited to dairy herds, poultry and rabbits improves productivity, ultimately improving the bottom line.
  • Festival and entertainment events: Large events and festivals can be challenged when the temperatures rise, impacting patrons, performers, and staff. Well-designed and strategically placed misting systems keep temperatures under control and reduce heat-stress illnesses.
  • Odor control: Certain types of industrial process or manufacturing produce unpleasant odors. Professional misting systems can mitigate those unwanted odors, improving the environment for employees, vendors, and neighbors.

High Pressure Misting Systems use small amounts of water, their appurtenances and overall operational design reduce the probability of water-borne disease such a legionella. The benefits of this type of system include:

  • High-Pressure misting systems atomize at 1,000 psi, creating exceedingly small droplets that are much slower (1000-l) and almost immediately evaporate; avoiding skin contact.
  • This “flash evaporation” reduces the ambient temperature by 20 to 25 degrees.
  • Unlike portable or home-improvement grade misting systems, High-Press Misting Systems are tankless using a direct connection from your municipal water source. This ensures you a fresh water supply, eliminating the worry of stagnation, algae or other viral containments found many times in small water tanks.
  • One high-pressure pump can attach to multiple fans from one water source and can be installed in tents, inflatables, outdoor structures, or patios.

Misting systems can be permanently installed or can temporarily deployed. Using professional grade misting system components, designed specifically for the installation will help avoid performance issues.

Cool Zone has sold, designed, built, and installed multiple industrial high-pressure misting systems into various industrial and manufacturing facilities, restaurants, wineries, hospitality venues, and in exclusive residential applications. Many of these misting systems are fully automated, with controls to turn on the misting for different durations of time in separate zones throughout the facility or location.

Christopher P. Miehl, who grew up just 10 miles away from Rich Stadium, is an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

But on Sunday he’ll be backing both the Bills and the Vikings in his return to his old neighborhood. In fact, Miehl supported the Patriots in last year’s Super Bowl. And in the past four seasons, he’s been behind the Colts, Lions, Chiefs, Bengals, Steelers, Chargers and other Buffalo foes, too.

That’s because Miehl, 40, is in the fan service business. He’s come back to the South Towns this weekend as executive vice president of Cool Zone, the San Diego company that creates a London fog along the sidelines of pro football on steamy days.

In fact, if you missed Cool Zone’s fans over the last few seasons, you’ll surely get a chance this year. The big, white fans are scheduled to be used at 78 pro games this season and dozens more college contests.

Sweaty athletes squatting before the fans enjoy the cooling effect of the simple technology of Cool Zone: fan-blown water produces an evaporating mist that cuts the temperature by 20 to 25 degrees.

“The Bills were the first NFL team to use our product,” said Miehl, son of Frank and Frances Miehl of Hamburg.

That was in the AFC championship game in Miami in January 1993, which the Bills won. The Bills hired Cool Zone to accompany them to Pasadena later that month for the Super Bowl contest with the Cowboys.

Since then, six Cool Zone fans have shown up behind the Buffalo bench in every road game involving a warm-climate opponent. In what is the earliest start of an NFL season, Sunday’s game is the first home contest for which the Bills hired Cool Zone, Miehl said.

“We have a hard time with guys who are big in this sport,” said Russell “Rusty” Jones, the Bills’ strength and conditioning coach. “Heat has such a devastating effect on performance.”

He said the Bills used to have a tough time keeping cool in Miami, for instance. The team tried blowing fans over ice cubes, wet towels, ice packs. “But it never worked,” Jones said.

He said he spotted Cool Zone fans in a college broadcast on television and ended up hiring the firm.

“I will tell you this: psychologically as well as physiologically, it’s a plus,” Jones said.

At home games, if the host sets up Cool Zone fans for its squad, the visitors must get them, too, according to league rules. At $2,500 per sideline, Cool Zone still barely breaks even in leasing and operating the equipment to teams, Miehl said.

But that’s fine, he said, because the games provide publicity, something the five-year-old firm needs as it attempts to exceed last year’s record of $2 million in sales.

Revenue may double this year as the company expands globally. Employment already has tripled, to 15 workers, said Cool Zone Chairman James Naugorney.

Growth is certain, he said, because Coca-Cola has adopted the company’s systems for pavilion concession stands to cool customers. One such setup is at the Canada’s Wonderland theme park near Toronto. The pavilions were used at 17 Coke locations in Atlanta during the Olympics last summer.

“In the first year of putting these Cool Zones at 14 theme parks, Coke’s sales went up 127 percent,” said Naugorney, who attended the University at Buffalo during the 1960s. The former New York Mets and New York Islanders executive said he invested all the money he made in sports into Miehl’s company after investigating its patents.

In June, Naugorney also got some Wall Street investors to buy a $1.5 million stake in Cool Zone. He said he expects to take the company public in three years.

Miehl said the capital has been needed for the company to grow. Until last year he hadn’t drawn a salary and was charging company expenditures on his personal credit cards. “The company didn’t have credit,” he said.

The company’s products, also used in industrial settings and open-air malls, are expanding. Cool Zone intends to roll out a system to help cool firefighters next year, Miehl said.

Meanwhile, its credibility is building in sports as systems have been used at the World Cup in 1994, in major league bullpens and in college football bowl games.

“We’ll be used by the Bills six times this year,” Miehl said. “They’ve never had a real, live game in August in Buffalo. It could be hot.”

Christopher Miehl founded Cool Zone in 1993 with two former colleagues. Over the next couple years Cool Zone grew to dominate the sports misting/cooling market working at multiple NFL and NCAA venues. Cool Zone also provided misting/cooling systems for the World Cup, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the Woodstock 1999, MLB games at home and at Mexico City and NASCAR racing events. In addition, Cool Zone built numerous Coca Cola Cool Zone Misting Stations around the country and around the world. These hard structures were open from the front so that patrons could walk inside them, be cooled by the misting system, and purchase Coca Cola from vending machines.

In 1996 Cool Zone, venture capitalists acquired majority interest in the Cool Zone. They proceeded to place their associates in top management of the Company and then proceeded to remove the individuals who started the Company. The investment bankers provided $2 million in seed money for the Company, of which they took a half million out in fees.

After the initial investment there was an additional bridge loan that provided to Cool Zone in 1997 on the basis that there would be another round of financing. This second round of financing never materialized, and all the assets were pledged as collateral on for this bridge loan.

By 1999 Cool Zone’s revenues and personal were growing rapidly but they were still facing financial losses. Cool Zone was heavy with top management who, received large salaries and bonuses even through the Company had never shown a profit.

Later in 1999 the Investment Bankers, who had provided the bridge, removed the remaining assets from Cool Zone San Diego and combined them with another entity in Las Vegas. The new entity then moved from San Diego to Las Vegas to became part of a new venture. It left the original Cool Zone behind in California to face the creditors and the employees. Subsequently, the old Cool Zone went out of business.

Christopher Miehl moved with Cool Zone to Las Vegas as it transferred its operations from San Diego.
He took up residency in Las Vegas from May to December.

Although he was stripped of his title of President of the Sports Division but nevertheless he took charge of their sports division and make good on the football contracts for 1999 football season. He then resigned at the end of the football season.

In December 1999, Christopher Miehl left Las Vegas and returned to San Diego to be the founder of his own sports misting company, Big Fogg on 1/1/2000. He never became involved in the legal matters between the legal suits between management of Cool Zone and their former employees. The employees won their legal suit in 2000 and the judge awarded them a settlement. However, since Cool Zone of San Diego had no resources, it had to declare bankruptcy, and no one was paid despite the legal judgement in their favor.

The management at Cool Zone understands that during these difficult times of Covid-19 that all Americans must work together to get through this epidemic. Cool Zone proudly supplies its misting systems to many industries impacted by Cov-19. During this crisis we will continue to focus our efforts on providing the best misting solutions to our customers and to the community at large.

Cool Zone designs, builds and installs professional high-pressure misting/fogging delivery systems that can be used in the to spray disinfectant misting products. Cool Zone sells a variety of different methods to deliver this mist, depending upon the customer needs. Our products are made from stainless steel, using corrosion resistant nylon and copper lines. Our 1000 psi high-pressure pump pushes water and other liquids through small orifices, that turn the mist into a fog which results in “flash” evaporates. Due to the rapid evaporation of the liquids, wetness is practically eliminated, leaving just a small film of product on the surface.

Cool Zone can set up these disinfectant misting systems throughout facilities, warehouses, club houses, food processing plants and any industrial or commercial application, Cool Zone uses sensors and timers for the automated distribution of mist. The misting systems can be as simple as pushing a button and the misting is started until the button is pushed again to stop it. Also Cool Zone has extensive experience at maintaining humidity levels at desired levels by adjusting the misting so that it turns on and off at specific times or conditions.

Cool Zone uses injectors to place chemicals into our delivery systems and sprays with properly sized nozzles. In almost all cases we dilute the product with water, however we have used product with no dilatation that injects directly through the high-pressure pumps.

Cool Zone can install overhead systems, or wall mounted throughout the facility. Alternatively, we can provide portable misting fans that can be used to disinfect specific areas.

We can use the disinfectant product that you can supply, or we can suggest a disinfectant provided by company that we work with that has an FDA environmentally approved product.

Cool Zone Products for Disinfectant Misting:

  1. High-Pressure Stainless-Steel Misting Systems

Cool Zone misting system delivers the liquid by pump at 1000 psi. through specific size nozzles that effectively delivers the disinfecting product. The high-pressure misting line consists of 316 stainless steel, with stainless steel fitting and unions. The nozzles can have an orifice size between .008 and .020 depending on the application. These nozzles can be stainless steel with anti-drip bodies or brass.

These misting systems can be installed overhead in a factory and automated by zone to turn on at specific times or under specific conditions, or by simply pushing and on and off button or switch.

.

  • High Pressure Misting Fans:

Cool Zone High Pressure Misting Fans can either be hooked up to a water/substance supply system or injector that pushes the liquid though the stainless-steel nozzles. These misting fans operate at 1000 psi. They also push the product through nozzle orifices which creates flash evaporation.

Cool Zone also carries a Cool Caddie High Pressure Misting Fan with a tank to place disinfectant before misting the area. These misting fans have been enhanced using Viton seals for chemical use.

Cool Zone also sells and install wall mounted misting fans, overhead misting fans as well as portable misting fans.

  • Inflatable Misting Systems:

Cool Zone makes inflatable misting systems have misting nozzles strategically placed throughout the interior with an aim to spray down everyone that walks through the mist. These inflatables are connected to a high-pressure pump operating at 1000 psi and can be hooked to an injector that feeds the high-pressure pump.
  • Misting Tents, Misting Stations and Misting Trailers

Misting Tents can be placed be easily placed at any location and for any activity. Cool Zone supplies misting tents in any size but the most popular is a 10’ by 10’ model. These misting tents operate at 1000 psi and can be turned on and off at the misting pump or remotely.

Misting Stations have spray nozzles placed inside them and turn on and off when someone or something enters the misting station. These misting stations are connected to a high-pressure pump, operating at 1000 psi which can use injectors when necessary.

Misting Trailers are totally independent misting systems. Cool Zone sells them in configurations of 3 Misting Fans, 4 Misting Fans and 6 Misting Fans. They come with high pressure pump operating at 1000 psi, 250-gallon water tank and a quiet generator.
  • High-Pressure Pumps:

Cool Zone uses direct drive misting pumps with high output misting for any continuous operation or activity. They have been used in the past at restaurants and events and even for locations where odor and dust control in large areas where needed.

Additional features and options:

Cool Zone can substitute quiet pulley belt units which work better in more confined spaces with less tolerance for noise.

Cool Zone high pressure pump units have UL recognized components, including a safety switch for automatic power-down when water supply is low. Both unit types also have thermal and short circuit protection to prevent from overloading a breaker circuit.

Cool Zone high pressure pumps come in a variety of electrical configurations from the 115v single phase to 460v three phases with a relay and dual filter to prolong the life of the unit.

These pumps are generally used to separate mist zones. For example, if you have four patios and only need to mist one at a time, these pumps can adjust speeds, depending upon the demand of mist needed in each area. If there are six misting fans and you only want to mist to two fans, the pump system will slow down and only provide misting to only those two fans.

Cool Zone also supplies VFD pumps can be built with electric valves that can be switched remotely from wherever you would prefer to control the system.

High pressure ball valves can also be used for manually creating zones near the pump or area where the mist is needed.

Cool Zone cooling the world since 1994.

It is remarkable that 21st century technology allows people to enjoy, relax and be cool in the great outdoors even in the excessive heat of the summer. In today’s marketplace there a large variety of different outdoor cooling products that basically air condition your patio, backyard or deck area. In fact, the more severe the weather conditions are the more effective these outdoor cooling products function.

There are many different types of misting systems but one of the most effective is a misting fan. Perhaps you have seen these fans on TV while they were operating on the sidelines of an NFL or an NCAA Football Game. Every weekend during the months of September and October you will see these large misting fans behind the offensive and defensive benches on the football sidelines helping protect players from the heat as they keep them cool. Big Fogg recalls the initiation of the product and its first use. “When we first placed Big Fogg Misting Fans on the NFL and NCAA sidelines, no one paid much attention to them at that time. It was an educational process teaching the trainers and equipment managers the advantages of using our misting fans for outdoor and sideline cooling. By 2011, all NFL teams and most NCAA programs use some type of cooling system on their sideline and the majority of the time it is a Big Fogg Misting Fan.”

Misting fans have also been installed and operated at theme parks, stadiums and restaurants and also have been set-up at fairs, festivals and concerts and other special events. In most cases, whenever the Misting Fans are turned on at any event or gathering, patrons flock to them to enjoy their outdoor cooling properties. Children seem to love misting fans as they congregate around them at events seeking their unique cooling capabilities and standing in front of the nozzles as the fine mist hits their face.

These misting fans also keep both people and pets cool and safe from the heat. During the San Diego Fire of 2008, Qual Comm Stadium (where the Chargers play) was used as holding facility for displaced people who had lost their homes. Many accommodations were made for them to make them as comfortable as possible in their temporary quarters. Many also brought along their pets. Misting fans were setup in the parking lot to cool down all the animals that were temporarily living at the stadium. The report from the stadium was the pets loved the misting fans during the hot San Diego weather and, after misting, responded better to their owners during this onerous situation.

A side benefit of using these misting fans, besides outdoor cooling, is they even repel mosquitoes, flies and insects and make the outdoor an even more enjoyable experience.

The post How Cool Zone Misting Fans Introduced to NFL & NCAA Football appeared first on Coolzone LLC.

]]>
Cool Zone was the first company to put Misting Fans as a sideline cooling system for the NFL and NCAA football games. How did that come about? Where did the idea come from to put misting fans on the sideline of football games? Was it a fluke or was it just genius?

Below is the history of how this occurred. How Misting Fans ended up on the sideline of football games? How did it turn from a being a novelty to absolute necessity for every NFL team and division 1 NCAA football team? Misting Fans and/or cooling systems have become a sideline fixture for almost every game in 2020 football season.

Christopher Miehl, the current President and CEO of Big Fogg, remembers how the idea originated to place Misting fans on the sideline of football games.

“I was working as a consultant, or in other words, I was between jobs looking for work. A Headhunter connected me with a company that had a backyard misting system that was being assembling in Los Angeles. I was helping them find another location to move the company production, since labor in LA was expensive. We were told to locate the company in an economically disadvantaged community, where we could receive tax breaks, and other government assistance. It was suggested that we look at the City of Hemet, CA in the Inland Empire since it fit these criteria.
Another member of Cool Zone and I arranged to visit with the Chamber of Commerce in Hemet.

It was a hot sunny day in June when we drove to Hemet. We meet with the Hemet Chamber President, and he showed us around town and to the facilities where we could receive tax breaks. These facilities did not meet our criteria.

After our meeting, during our return trip from Hemet we drove through the farm community surrounding Hemet. It was very hot that day, and the farmers had set up large fans with water nozzles that were cooling down the cows. We joked about how the large cows looked like professional football players cooling themselves in front of the spray from the make shift misting fan.

The idea came to us that we could put these fans on the sideline of football game to keep the players cool. We could put our company’s name on the shroud covering the fan as advertising for people to see our name and purchase our backyard misting system.

I thought of our idea and I contacted a friend who worked at USC, who lead me to another person and finally to the USC equipment manager, Dino Dennis.

Dino liked the idea. Consequently, USC became the first football team to use misting fans on their sideline and did so throughout the entire season.

At the end of the college football regular season USC was contacted by the Aloha Bowl to determine where they could find their misting fans. It was abnormally hot in Honolulu. Kansas State was playing BYU and both teams wanted misting fans for their bowl game.

The first question we asked the Aloha Bowl was “Are we going to get paid for our services”?
They offered to pay for the services so we had our first paying football gig.

Our Cool Zone made arrangements to ship twelve misting fans, enough to service both teams, to Hawaii for the Bowl game. We sent over a crew of four enough to transport and assemble the misting fans.

The game went off without a hitch. As I was watching the game on television, I noted that Cool Zone fans received a lot of exposure.

Rusty Jones of the Buffalo Bills saw the Misting Fans on the sideline at the Aloha Bowl. The Bills had just beaten the Steelers to go to the AFC Championship game in Miami. We were then commissioned by the Bills to set up misting fans on the sideline for the Bills against the Dolphins. The Bills defeated the Dolphins in AFC Championship game, and then went on to play in the Super Bowl.

Football misting

The Super Bowl that year was in Los Angeles, and the Buffalo Bills were scheduled to play the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL hired us to supply misting fans for both the Cowboys and the Bills at the Rose Bowl, where the Super Bowl was being placed.

We showed up that day in the morning of the big game with a truck load of misting fans and associated equipment. I was on the Cowboys sideline and ex-football star OJ Simpson stood next to me right before he flipped the coin and declared “If this game is half as good as its hype it will be a great game”.
Five months later was accused of murder.

The Bills got off to a good start and were ahead 7-0. But Cowboys came up to dominate and were up 28-10 at half time. The half-time show was included Michael Jackson and Garth Brooks.”

So, the idea of bringing Misting Fans to the NFL & NCAA football Sidelines went from Big Fans with nozzles cooling down cows in Hemet to setting up Misting Fans on both sidelines of a Super Bowl in eight months. Amazing!

Sideline cooling by misting fans with high pressure mist has never been used before.
Since then these misting fans were so successful heating benches were developed to heat the sideline. Now in 2020 the majority of NFL and division 1 teams use either Big Fogg Misting Fans that are Cool Zone type misting fan of Big Fogg heating benches for their sideline cooling and heating.

MARATHON MISTING: Cool Zone™ Provides Misting Fans to the Rock & Roll Marathon, San Diego June 2005

Coca-Cola USA requested Cool Zone to provide Misting Fans to cool the athletes and attendees at the Rock & Roll Marathon held in San Diego last month. Cool Zone set up and operated (28) twenty-eight of its unique Misting Fans at eight strategically selected misting stations along the 26.2 mile course. These Cool Zone helped cool the 26,000 runners and walkers, enabling them to improve their comfort and enhance their performance. These Cool Zone Misters also provided visibility to Coca Cola’s dynamic new beverage product ZERO.

The Cool Zone was unbelievable. As I approached the 20 mile marker, my body was starting to feel the effect of the marathon distance. Then I saw the Cool Zone Misting Fan station. Boy, did it help me rejuvenate and continue on re-energized. I loved them! Cool Zone’s Misting Fans should be used at every Marathon, acclaimed Eric Sears of Los Angeles.

Fred Valle, General Manager of Cool Zone, stated: It was quite a challenge to set up those eight (8) Misting Stations. They closed down the roads at 4:30 AM and started the race 2 hours later. We had a crew of six technicians that set up the twenty-eight (28) Misting Fans. Cool Zone technicians stayed ahead of the runners, and left a misting specialist at each misting station. Coordination and organization was essential to pull this one off. Having eight mister locations along the route and at the finish line was terrific for both the runners and the crowd. We plan to offer a similar Misting System for the next Los Angeles Marathon.

Four days earlier, we had finished setting up Misting Systems throughout the UCLA Jazz and Reggae Festival over Labor Day weekend. Our misting technicians completed this job very effectively, said Christopher Miehl, President & CEO of Cool Zone.

With the great cooling performance that our misters provide, be sure to call Cool Zone to supply your Misting Systems needs at your next special or sporting event.
